You know.. When you live in the “Tornado Valley” you often get these alerts about Tornados. Sometimes, they happen in the middle of the day while youre unexpecting and minding your own buisness.
Your mom may call, freaking out as she normaly is, telling you to get in the basement and watch the weather channel. Naturaly, you go outside to see whats going on. The sun is shining away, birds happily singing, and clouds of doomsday may be on the edge of the horizon (if you look the right way). You’ll go back inside and take your time getting to the basement. Round up the dogs, spontaneously grab the cat, and move your computer down with you.
This is the point when you turn on your TV to see this horrible tornado. Itll show your county, warning for the whole county, but the only part where the tornado is, happens to be the fartest point away from your house possible. Just because, you keep watching.
They show you the radar, all the greens and reds. During these times, you learn enough to pretty much become a weatherperson yourself. When the red’s are close to the greens, its bad. You dont really know what to be looking for right away, because there’s allways yellow between the red and green. Then they have this little circle thing moving around that shows you a different type or radar. This has pinks, whites, reds, and greens. They are all in these slanted rectangles. These are the reds, you dont want next to the greens.
Now that you know, you begin to wonder if there are any of those near your part of the storm. Of corse, they dont show you. You’re forced to watch them warning people no where near you.
The red part hits your area and youll look outside. Its barely even raining. Suddenly, the channel gets a phone call! A man driving through your town, heading for the closer town with the tornado. He speaks of how as he got closer to your town, the rain got heavier and heavier, eventually forcing him to pull over. You look outside, nothing. Then the show you a picture of the tornado. Its HUGE. You look outside, nothing.
All in all, there are some people who are hit hard by these storms, and others who dont see a thing of it. If these types of radars were offered to use by the public. (not just those lame ones that are usualy a half hour behind the action.) Some of us could get on with our lives. We could look for those reds by greens and know ourselves where to avoid. Thats when some smart guy will go on about how none of us will understand it. So? at least give us the option! Its kind of like facebook… you figure it out.
